Dismantling

How many times have you driven by an old barn or abandoned homesteads, half dilapidated structures and wondered, “who lived there, what happened to them”?

I’m ready to go…

There is some unique history with this corn crib. When I was contacted to tear her down I was amazed at how beautiful the old lady still was. They sure built them to last our harsh prairie weather trends.
She had a wonderful secret to tell me too.

She was built by World War II German prisoners of war!
Can you imagine? It just adds to her mystique.
I walked in and saw this….

She had done her job well. She had outlasted her usefullness but the old “frau” still has much to give. I have started dismantling her.

It is time consuming and takes know how.
All wood and bolts…

There are no buzzing saws or heavy duty equipment, it is slow work. No shortcuts.

wow

Time.

It can be the enemy of buildings.  When the inhabitants have themselves succumb to time and move on. Without care, the buildings deteriorate. Some are bulldozed, removed in a single day with little regard.      I take my time to dismantle a building, some times it’s theraputic for the past owner to stop and chat. Tell stories about the building and even pull a nail or two. Off and on they commision a table or tray to be built with the wood. More often than not they make something themselves.
